The EIHL has announced that they have extended their TV deal with Sky Sports for the coming season, due to start in 2 days.

Here is the press release:

Rapid Solicitors Elite League press release

The Rapid Solicitors Elite League is excited to announce it will continue its partnership with British sports broadcaster Sky Sports and production company Televideo for the 2012-13 season.

Elite League ice hockey was first shown on Sky Sports in 2007 and has had a high-profile image ever since, including a weekly highlights show and some classic live games over the years, including the last three play-off finals.
Rapid Solicitors Elite League spokesperson, Tony Smith, said: “It is fantastic news that the League will once again be covered on Sky Sports.
“Getting exposure on national television is very important to us and we are thrilled to be working with Sky and Televideo again.”
Televideo are the production company behind the weekly show and their managing director, Paul Scivill, said: “We are delighted to be producing the show for Sky Sports for the sixth consecutive season.”
This is good news for the EIHL.  I’m sure all of us as fans would love to get more coverage than we currently do, but it’s just a fact of life at the moment here in the UK that ice hockey is a niche sport, consigned to a corner at the back of the sports pages in newspapers and to weekly highlight programs on TV, with the odd game broadcast live here and there.  There is apparently talk of the BBC, encouraged by the enormous viewing figures during the Olympics, continuing to operate some of the extra sports channels they operated over that event to cover some of the country’s “secondary” sports, such as gymnastics and handball.  It’s hoped by some that ice hockey may be included in that, although I’m sceptical especially with the Sky deal already in place, at least for this season.
Some coverage is better than no coverage, however!
