2015 NHL Coors Light Stadium Series Press Recap
It was just about two months ago when the NHL announced that this season’s Stadium Series would be held on February 21st, 2015 between the San Jose Sharks and the Los Angeles Kings at the new Levi’s Stadium, home to the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers, in Santa Clara, California.
Yesterday afternoon, the NHL held a press event at Levi’s Stadium to officially kick off the countdown to Northern California’s first ever outdoor hockey game. We would soon find out from Commissioner Gary Bettman that the game is “already close to a sellout”.
We know that there are great, passionate Sharks fans, displaced NHL fans from around North America that live in the Bay Area, and we figured you combine the Sharks with the interest in this state and it was an enormous proposition.
– NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman
Everyone knows about the rivalry in California between the Sharks, Kings, and Ducks. The Ducks and Kings don’t like each other. Sharks and Ducks don’t either. Last season, the NHL started the Stadium Series with the Ducks and Kings at Dodgers Stadium, which resulted in a massive success among the hockey community. This season will showcase a rivalry that’s been brewing since the Sharks came into the League back in 1991: the Sharks – Kings rivalry. It’s a rather more under appreciated rivalry, but believe me when I say it is intense. Every game that I’ve watched between the two, playoffs or not, has that playoff atmosphere and recently the rivalry’s only intensified.
Among others who attended (some who spoke as well during the event) were Sharks play-by-play announcer Randy Hahn (who gave the opening for the presser), Sharks Chief Operating Officer John Tortora, GM Doug Wilson, forwards Joe Pavelski and Logan Couture, defenseman Marc-Eduoard Vlasic, 49ers CEO Jed York, Kings President Luc Robitaille, Santa Clara Mayor Jamie L. Matthews, and San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed.
Tickets are out now, but as Gary Bettman implied they are very limited now. So get yours while they’re still in stock.
