New York Islanders Acquire Boychuk, Leddy
The New York Islanders traded for defensemen Johnny Boychuk from the Boston Bruins and Nick Leddy from the Chicago Blackhawks today in an effort to improve their defense. In exchange, the Bruins got second-round picks for the 2015 and 2016 NHL Drafts, and a conditional third-rounder in 2015.
If the Isles trade Boychuk to an Eastern Conference team during the 2014-15 season, they would get conditional 2015 third-rounder. Also from Chicago, the Isles got goalie Kent Simpson. The Blackhawks received defensemen TJ Brennan and Ville Pokka along with rights to goalie Anders Nilsson, who is an RFA playing in Russia this season.
Boychuk had 5 goals, 23 points, 45 PIMs, and was a plus-31 in 75 games played for Boston. He can become a UFA after this season.
Leddy had 7 goals, 31 points, 10 PIMs, and was plus-10 with the Hawks last season.
Both Boston and Chicago had salary cap problems prior to these trades.
