NHL Announces Las Vegas Expansion for 2017-18 Season
It is official. Today, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman officially announced an expansion to Las Vegas.
A couple months ago, we first broke news here at Ice Nation UK of a possible expansion in the works to Sin City.
Per the NHL Public Relations Twitter account, the Vegas franchise will play in the Pacific Division in the 2017-18.
Although the rumor is that the Las Vegas team will be named the Black Knights, there still has been no official name, logo, or jersey unveiled. That will happen by next season.
The NHL last expanded to both Minnesota and Columbus in the 2000-01 season.
Bettman also gave news that the application to bring a team back to Quebec City was deferred back to Quebecor for future expansion opportunities. The commissioner also said that there will be no NHL teams up for relocation, and that the League alignment will remain the same.
This latest expansion also ensures that the NHL will be holding an expansion draft following this coming 2016-17 season.
The team will play at the newly built T-Mobile Arena.
